History

Evolution

Today we’re the UK’s most successful producer of fruit juice drinks and Europe’s largest dedicated juice manufacturer, producing 650 million litres of juice per year. But we’ve grown from humble beginnings, starting out as a small food business in the West Country.

Somerset Fruit Products was established in a nineteenth century brewery in the 1820s and evolved over the next 100 years, producing preserves and canned produce, fillings and jams. In 1985, the Hanover Group acquired the juice business and we became Gerber Foods Manufacturing.

Over the subsequent years, the company innovated and diversified, invested and acquired, expanded and developed, winning contracts and growing overseas.

Following our parent company’s acquisition of EMIG in 2001, we are the biggest supplier of juices and juice drinks in Europe – supplying Private Label and branded products.

Most recently, we’ve grown our co-logistics capabilities to realise the potential of the infrastructure we’ve built for the benefit of all kinds of customers. The customer base is as diverse as our offering and we now provide logistics solutions for all kinds of food and non-perishable producers: from seafood to dairy to pasta and beyond…Customers trust us to deliver results and take their products to markets they can’t reach alone.

In November 2013, Gerber Emig merged with the Dutch business Refresco BV to form Refresco Gerber and, in the UK, the business changed its name to Refresco Gerber UK Limited in March 2014.

In terms of scale and capability, we’ve come a long way. But we’re proud to still be based in Bridgwater, Somerset.

Most of all, we are still committed to providing end-to-end solutions for a diverse customer base.

We continue to look to the future and are evolving to embrace new technologies like Aseptic and ESL PET Bottling, producing products that meet changing tastes such as bottled smoothies, soy products, liquid foods and innovations in juice and dairy products.

How can we help you to grow too?
